SUMMARY:Carlos Sironi's "SOLE (Sun)"
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with New Italian Cinema Events (N.I.C.E.)\, the Department of French and Italian presents a film screening of SOLE (SUN) – A reflection on the choice to love\, by the emergent Italian director Carlo Sironi. \nSOLE\, focusing on the teenage and youth years experienced in a context of marginalization\, loneliness and cynicism. The director accurately describes the feeling of claustrophobia\, the sense of disorientation and discomfort due to the lack of roots and intercultural communication. In a society often unable to offer a model of human connections\, this film shows the importance of small daily gestures\, of how spontaneously one becomes attached\, caring and responsible\, and how one can find a way to redeem oneself by considering the future as an alternative to a life devoid of values and substance\, a possibility to glimpse new opportunities. \nThe film will be available Saturday\, November 14th and Sunday\, November 15th\, 2020. In Italian with English subtitles. \nFollowing the screening\, join the Q&A with director\, Carlo Sironi\, on Thursday\, November 19\, 2020 at 4pm via Zoom. \nFor more information about accessing the film\, visit the Department of French and Italian website. \nOpen to the University community. \nSupport for this event has been provided in part by Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts\, the Humanities Council\, the Program in Italian Studies\, and the University Center for Human Values

SUMMARY:Carissa Rodriguez's "The Maid" and "The Girls"
DESCRIPTION:New York-based artist Carissa Rodriguez will present two of her films\, “The Maid” (2018) and “The Girls” (1997/2018). These works are framed by a short story by writer Robert Walser\, tracking a caregiver’s 20-year search for a charge who got lost under her watch. Rodriguez’s own “Maid” follows six embryo-like Newborn (1993) sculptures by Sherrie Levine — themselves casts of a modernist 1915 work by Constantin Brancusi. \n“The Girls” returns to footage of Rodriguez’s Chinatown neighborhood in the 1990s\, lingering on the image of young girls at play. Channeling Walser’s exquisite compression of twenty years into a single paragraph\, Rodriguez’s films similarly suggest the asynchronous and capacious timescale of works of art. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artist about time and the slippage between biological\, social\, and artistic forms of reproduction. \nTo receive Zoom link\, please email blleavey@princeton.edu
