Cinema and Politics in Latin America

Saul Hernandez Rosales

Back to "Spring 2026" courses

Latin American cinema is tightly intertwined with the region’s political landscape, historically serving as a means to document social realities and examine particular political formations. In this course, we will use cinema as a catalyst to explore transformative, at times traumatic, political and social events, including democracy, agrarian reform, revolution, dictatorial regimes, and neoliberalism. In addition to watching a group of memorable films, students will be asked to read and discuss short secondary readings by writers, lawyers, historians, and political scientists on the events the films focus on. Course taught in Spanish.
