Thomas Levin Named Chair of the Humanities Council’s Committee for Film Studies

September 30, 2025

Thomas Y. Levin (German) has been named chair of the Humanities Council’s Committee for Film Studies, effective August 1, 2025. As Chair, he will direct programming, lead executive committee meetings, and advise on the co-sponsorship of activities and events related to film studies.

Levin, who is an associate professor of German, joined the Princeton faculty in 1990. His teaching and scholarship include a range of topics, from Frankfurt School cultural theory and the history and theory of film to media theory and sound studies.

Together with Nikolaus Wegmann (German, emeritus) and two directors from the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM), Levin co-founded the Princeton-Weimar Media Studies Summer School in 2010, which “provides advanced training in the study of media and cultural techniques” to graduate students. Levin has co-directed the program every other year since its inception.

In Fall 2025, he will teach “Introduction to Media Theory,” which will examine the development of critical reflection on technology and media from the late 19th to the early 21st century.
